Sungei Road Laksa

Sungei Road Laksa

lao uncle preparing the laksa

Laksa eaten with spoon only, no chopsticks! lovely juicy hum(cockles), not spicy soup (so mild till even my sis eats it, but of course she does not mix in the chilli), packed in a small~medium sized bowl and all for the price of just ... $2!
Its like prices of 10+ years ago! not so much coconut milk as other places, so less fattening for those health conscious ppl, and as its not a super big bowl, it helps cut down on the amount u eat. (though those who like it, can eat 2 bowls at a go easily enough)

Rojak here is good too.

Chicken rice here is cheap, at just $2 a plate, taste is decent too. No pics as my sis ate most of it before i could take any =(

One of the fav places my relatives love to go to fairly often. Do note that there is a long queue if you go around lunch on sundays (like i did today)

Location as above.

Zamzam, Katong Laksa and an interesting place

Morning breakfast at zamzam,
697 North Bridge Road, opening hrs 8am~11pm, 2 floors, 2nd is air-con.
2F if u cant stand heat, 1F if u wanna see the cooks frying the pratas and get the smell of food cooking and the whiff of vehicle exhaust.

ordered food and waited. first came this 2 types of curries. and plates + spoons + forks.

along with this cucumbers.

after the 2 steaming hot curries had became cold/lukewarm, the food finally arrived!
That is onion + egg prata

MUTTON MURTABAK! (already cut by dad into 4) generously stuffed with minced mutton! very tasty and best of the stuff i had there!

Mutton bryani.. the rice is normal / sub-par(tina described it as "unwashed taste")
Mutton was a big chunk, soft ..but not so tasty

Mutton Kuma(or however it's spelt) i dont like the taste of this kinda curry >_<

Chicken Kuma(or however it's spelt) i dont like the taste of this kinda curry >_<

squid in oil + chilli sauce.. nth special

In conclusion,
Go to zamzam for their murtabaks, dont bother with the rest of the stuff

Tina then said: "we should have gone for katong laksa", my dad agreed and said "lets go now for it"
(and my sister is supposedly watching her diet, so is my dad... and there they went and decided on laksa after all that food =.=) So after looking at some shops in the area

, we went all the way down to katong for laksa! i wish mine had more hums though

After eating came across this:

Katong Antique House

its a shop/house dealing with antiques of Singapore, mostly peranakan stuff, had a bunch of elderly ppl inside sitting ard lazily too. Stepping into the shop felt like taking a step back in time

BEEEEEF & potatoes

beef, cooked on each side for abt 8mins over medium heat, with butter and abit of salt. the beef browns nicely and doest get burnt if medium heat, juicy too. just that doing each side for 8mins x 5~6 sides can mean an hour standing in front of the stove, holding the beef in position with a pair of tongs.

and after cutting, abit toooooo rare for my sister's taste, so have to lengthen cooking time to get it medium instead of medium-rare / rare

and potato sidedish.

Total cooking time: 1 hr

leftover beef can be sliced up into 1/2 inch pieces, cooked till well done then mixed with the potatoes for a quick meal the next day.

2010 Resolutions

Better late then never. =)

1) STUDY at least an hour on my UOL subjects a day, excluding time spent in classes. (instead of 0 secs per day)

2) Eat more vegetables and fruits

3) Drop to a healthier weight range

4) Exercise more often

5) start swimming again

May i keep them all.

Cups!

Cups from Giant, offer redemption :D (yes, those are cats, though the brown one looks like a hamster)

Saturday

Dropped by plaza sing for carl's jr and "resupply run" with sis.

The usual beef chilli cheese fries criss cut :D chilli but not spicy cause chilli to americans and to asians mean totally different things.. lol

This here is their "texas toothpicks", which is fried onions and jalapenos.. not too tasty, so wont order again.

A fav, portobello mushroom burger~

After that went to spotlight for sis's knitting stuff and daiso to wander ard.

Gotta love the funny names stuff can get.. XD "Shining lame" (FYI thats stuff for knitting)

wandered off to Tangs to find stuff to use my mum's vouchers on.. but nothing interesting so dropped by ION B4 and found:

Hokkaido Croquettes~ only $1 each too.

They look like this, nicely breaded and fried. had flavours like buttered corn, taro, salmon spinach and one more i forgot >_<
Buttered corn was nice, the potatoe + bits of buttery corn did go fairly well together. Also tried the taro version, sadly was abit cold.... so did't taste so gd, taro chunks were slightly hard as well, would have been better if the chunks were softer. though potato + taro = weird combination

Upcoming Movies

Movies to HAHA over
The Spy Next Door
looks set to be an action - comedy of good laughs and nice action with jackie chan!

The Tooth Fairy
take "the rock" , make him have wings and be a cute 'little' tooth fairy.. LOL

Movies to scare yourself
Daybreakers
what happens if almost everyone is a vampire? dont seem so scary, but gives an insight into a world where almost everyone is a vampire, and humans are kept like cows....

Legion
no more sci-fic end of the world crap, back to the classical end of days by God. action-horror-fantasy all mixed up in one chilling package it seems.... and judging by the trailer, be wary of old people. hehe

Cell Phone Radiation

gogo give ur grandma + grandpa + other old ppl u know handphones to use!

Source

All those cancer concerns surrounding cell phones may have to make room for good news. Astonished scientists found that electromagnetic radiation from cell phones not only boosted the memories of young mice, but even reversed Alzheimer's symptoms in old mice. Their study marks the first to investigate how long-term electromagnetic radiation affects memory function.

The University of South Florida study showed that the electromagnetic waves erase brain deposits of the harmful protein beta-amyloid, which represents a hallmark of mentally crippling Alzheimer's disease. The exposure also prevented build-up from the protein in younger Alzheimer's mice -- a possible lead on future non-invasive Alzheimer's treatments for humans.

Almost 100 mice endured two 1-hour periods of daily exposure to an antenna that generated a cell phone signal, during a period of seven to nine months. Most of the mice were genetically engineered to develop Alzheimer's, but some non-demented mice also allowed researchers to see how the electromagnetic waves affect normal memory.

Even the non-demented mice saw benefits from the exposure through increased blood flow and energy metabolism in the brain. That improved brain activity actually boosted the memory of the mice to above-normal levels.

"It will take some time to determine the exact mechanisms involved in these beneficial memory effects," said Gary Arendash, a biomedical researcher at the University of Southern Florida. "One thing is clear, however -- the cognitive benefits of long-term electromagnetic exposure are real, because we saw them in both protection- and treatment-based experiments involving Alzheimer's mice, as well as in normal mice."

Future non-invasive treatments based on electromagnetic exposure might even help soldiers suffering from traumatic brain injury due to blasts, Arendash and his colleagues said. Such traumatic brain injuries also involve boosted production of the troublesome beta-amyloid plaque.

The study also addressed worries about cell phone exposure leading to cancer, and found no autopsy evidence of abnormal growth in the brains of the mice. That finding seems consistent with the positions of the World Health Organization, the American Cancer Society, and the National Institutes of Health, which all concluded that no scientific evidence points to bad health effects from cell phone use.

The researchers have already begun testing whether different electromagnetic frequencies or strengths can provide even better cognitive benefits. But for now, people can stop with the guilt about giving grandma or grandpa a brand new cell phone to avoid visits. Maybe they can even feel good.

First monday of 2010

Went to eat KFC for lunch! been ages since i last ate it... tasty~
went to sch, paid for exam fees... $1982 >______<

i forgot what this is called, but can be described as taking a fried mantou (those u typically have with chilli crab to slurp up the sauce) cut nearly in half and stuffing it with fried chicken + kimchi + veggie. not too bad, and 'warmest' of all the items served.

This is fried calamari + shrimp combo and thats fries on the side. Calamari was ok, cant say much abt the shrimp. Fries had some weird spice which wasnt that bad.. but the bad thing is that most of the food was COLD!

6 pieces of their crispy chicken. Taste was quite different due to the soy sauce glaze used, an interesting taste but not as good as KFC. Sadly, its not so cripsy as its cold.

Service was bad, sitting was terrible, and food was cold. Seriously dissappointed with my experience at Bon Chon @ ION.

leaving the place unsatisfied, i went walking around the basement and found this!

chocolate flavored exterior, banana cream inside~ not too bad, and priced @ $2.40 , tempted to try the other flavours.. but was kinda full already.

Then remembered walking past a store with nice desserts at wheelock place. so we went back for it!

It's called "BigO Cafe", located at #02-04/05 Wheelock place. They serve american food and have a nice array of desserts and cakes.

This above is their "Bananaruma", a nicely tasty chunky banana chocolate sponge cake flavored lightly with rum and covered in a thin layer of chocolate.

This here is the "Spike D" , durian sponge cake covered with chocolate fudge.

Spike D with a bite taken outta it already. not as much durian as i hoped, but good in a way that the durian wont overwhelm the taste of the fudge. Though i would prefer more durian

i wanna go ION again for takoyaki + ramen + idk what else... so many food , so little time, so little $ >___<
